The Chamber releases issue brief on need for greater transparency of small business fines
January 30, 2025
Today the New York City Council will held a public hearing on the legal and regulatory hurdles facing the city's small businesses. Chamber CEO Jessica Walker delivered testimony that highlighted the Chamber's new issue brief: The Need for Greater Transparency of Small Business Fines.
The brief highlights the need for City Council legislation to require certain City agencies to collect and publicly release data about which businesses are being fined, where they are located and what the specific violation was. This knowledge will lead to better targeting of education and other interventions aimed at helping small business owners to comply with local laws instead of being saddled with burdensome fines and other civil penalties.
